Sharecenter_img Share Share Former trade union leader, Louis Alfred ‘Zaboca’ Benoit says trade union leadership in Dominica today lack the will to effectively represent workers. In an exclusive interview with Dominica Vibes on Saturday 2 May 2015, Benoit offered his perspective on the present state of the trade union movement as well as what could be done to improve its standing. Benoit is a former president of the Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAWU) who held significant influence at the Woodbridge Bay Port.“The trade union leadership…they haven’t got the will. I think the trade union leaders we have, they talk too much; they go on the radio, television too much. That’s not how it operates”.Benoit said in his days, whenever there was a problem, “we call our members and we discuss the thing with our members”.“When we decided that we were going to do something, we were going to do something, but we wasn’t going to take our case and expect the public to solve it. So you don’t go advertising yourself and knocking your chest,” Benoit stated.Benoit, who is now retired but has been involved in the trade union movement since 1948, said union leaders must be serious whenever they are contemplating industrial action. He does not believe that today’s leaders have properly informed their members of the sacrifices involved in taking industrial action.“I believe in that; you call your members, you tell your members that is what is happening because you tell yourself, ‘when you go out there [on strike], I’m not going back [to work until demands are satisfied]”.“Because I have never gone on strike for me to go back [to work] and not [receive what I want]. Unless what I want, I have not received it, I am not going back anywhere. Period,” Benoit added.last_img read more
