NASCAR’s West Coast natives tame the #NASCARGoesWest tracks

first_imgDAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Kevin Harvick’s dominating victory in Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was head-turning in its standard of excellence. For NASCAR West Coasters like the Californian Harvick, winning on NASCAR’s Western Swing has become a particular source of pride. And statistics show, winning happens a lot for the West Coasters on the sport’s Western swing. This week’s top-three finishers at Vegas, for example, all hail from the region. In addition to Harvick, from Bakersfield, California, runner-up Kyle Busch is a Las Vegas native and third-place finisher Kyle Larson is from Elk Grove, California.RELATED: Full race results from Las Vegas | Harvick cracks 100 national series winsFive Monster Energy NASCAR Cup drivers from the West — Harvick, Busch, Larson, Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch account for 33 wins at the three #NASCARGoesWest tracks — Las Vegas, ISM Raceway in Phoenix, and Auto Club Speedway in California.Add another six wins — covering all three venues — if you count in California native, retired four-time champion Jeff Gordon’s work there.AJ Allmendinger, of Los Gatos, California, hasn’t won yet on the Western Swing, but did earn the pole position at ISM Raceway in 2010 and has two top-10 starts in his last four Auto Club Speedway races. And Phoenix native, Alex Bowman won the pole position at his hometown track in 2016 driving for the sidelined Dale Earnhardt Jr.With a pair of trophies in three races already this season, Harvick is riding a huge swell of momentum into this week’s TicketGuardian 500 (3:30 ET on FOX, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at ISM Raceway. It is a venue where he has already produced a career-highlight mark on his resume. He has a series-best eight wins at ISM Raceway and 19 top 10s in 30 starts. He won five of six races between 2013-2016, finishing runner-up in the only race during that stretch that he didn’t win. He hasn’t finished worse than sixth in the last nine ISM Raceway races. For Harvick, spending time out West is something he particularly looks forward to and this year he’s doing something he’s never done before — competing in a NASCAR K&N West Series race at Kern County Raceway in his native Bakersfield.RELATED: Race named after Harvick | Full schedule for Phoenix“To be brutally honest with you I am looking forward to going to race the K&N car more than any of them next Thursday — not because I don’t enjoy what I do here, but because I have never raced at Kern County Raceway in my hometown,” Harvick said last weekend in Las Vegas.“I like coming to all three of these races because I get to see so many fans and friends. The race of the three weeks that we are out here, the four that I am going to race, the one I am looking forward to the most is the K&N race because it isn’t something I get to do all the time.“If I had to pick one out of the three (Cup races he is most fond of) I would pick California just because I love the surface and how much the cars wear out the tires and slide around and the multiple grooves and all the things that come with Auto Club Speedway.”Competing in a sport once traditionally associated with the Southeast, for these West Coast natives, racing in places such as Las Vegas, Phoenix and California has been a chance to shine in front of the fans and supporters who watched them establish themselves and ascend at the local tracks throughout the region. That those same drivers seem to naturally fare so well “at home” is appreciated by team, by fan and by driver.A trophy this weekend would surely be welcomed by Californian Jimmie Johnson, the sport’s seven-time champion who hasn’t won a race since last spring. His mark of 26 races since a victory is the longest in his career, albeit a small time frame by any competitive standard. And he’s returning to the land of victory donuts and champagne toasts.Johnson is second only to Harvick in trophy-hauls and optimism at ISM Raceway with four wins, three pole positions and 20 top-10 finishes in 29 starts at the track. He captured those four victories during a five-race span during the 2007-09 seasons. He has four top-11 showings — and a pole — in the last six races at Phoenix. If Arizona doesn’t prove to be the place that restores his winning ways, Johnson is the gold standard in his native California, the track where he hoisted his first of 83 trophies. He boasts a series-best six wins at the 2-mile Auto Club Speedway and has accumulated 16 top-10 finishes in 23 starts at the track, his last win coming in 2016.Similarly, the Elk Grove, California, native Larson has proven himself top-shelf at Auto Club Speedway, winning from the pole position there last year. He was runner-up at the track in his first premier series there four years ago. With the exception of Larson (who was runner-up in the 2017 spring ISM Raceway race), Harvick, Johnson and both Busch brothers have victories at the always tough one-miler. Kyle Busch has finished in the top-five in his last five Phoenix races including runner-up in 2016. His older brother Kurt won at ISM Raceway in 2005 and has top-10 finishes in five of the last seven races there. At Auto Club Speedway, Kyle Busch has three victories, including back-to-back wins in 2013-14. His older brother Kurt won at California in 2003 and has four top-10s in the last six races there. The opportunity to compete in front of a “hometown” crowd is something Kyle Busch says he appreciates for competitive and sentimental reasons.“Everybody hates the time change,” he said. “I use that to my advantage since I think I’m usually on West Coast time, anyway. I still haven’t gotten East Coast time down yet.“It’s fun for me. It’s a cool atmosphere and the weather is great without the humidity. If it’s hot out, it’s nice and warm. And if it’s cold, it’s a crisp cold.“It’s still home and I love being out West.”last_img read more

What Is The Data Matrix? Machines and Humans Coexist

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts Tags:#web#Web 2.0 center_img AndrewNachison from The Media Centre raises some interesting issues regarding RSS contentaggregation. He boils it down to these 3 questions:1. Machines vs. humans? [in regards to aggregation]I agree with Andrew’s conclusion: “This isn’t an “either/or” theory but a“both/and” reality.” P.S. also check out The Media Center Matrix. Rich Skrenta from Topix.net has asimilar view: “For comprehensiveness, algorithmic techniques will have to come into play.People-powered systems just don’t scale to the long tail.”I too think there’s a middle ground to machine and human/social aggregation. CurrentlyI think we’re probably nearing the peak of human/social feed aggregation, in percentageterms. What I mean by that is that the average blogger/reader probably subscribes to80-90% human feeds and 10-20% machine feeds – and most of the latter would be egofeedsfrom the likes of PubSub, Technorati, Feedster (sometimes egofeeds of otherpeople :-). So topic and tag RSS feeds are at a very early stage of adoption –companies like PubSub, Findory and Topix areleading the way. From now on in, machine aggregation can really only increase its percentage of attention – while human feeds willdecrease. But don’t worry, because it’s not a zero sum game. Aggregation as a market willcontinue to increase at a great rate. Even though the ratio of human-to-machine feedswill even up in thecoming years, the whole pie will grow significantly.2. Who profits from the exploding digital datastream?Andrewsays that “traditional media companies” have in the past “derived enormous profit”from controlling information. But fragmenting audience is quickly moving that control tocontent aggregators – he specifically cites Google and Yahoo. The search and aggregation companies are set to profit. And provided a click-throughis still required to access full content, niche publishers should also profit too.One thing to watch is the brewing controversy(or browsting controversy in that case!) over full-content aggregation, which somecompanies are already attempting to profit from. I wonder also about excerpted content aggregation,or remixes of content – because the boundaries will surely be pushed in those areastoo.3. Who controls the datastream itself?Andrew doesn’t write much about number 3, so I’ll take a punt at it. The control ofcontent is in one sense moving very definitely towards the consumer, or reader (neitherterm seems to fit in this age of the read/write web!). This is something I’ve been exploringover the past months and whichcontinues to fascinate me. RSS Aggregators and topic/tag feeds are two technologies thatin a very real sense give power back to the user. I choose (by subscribing) whatcontent flows into my Aggregator. I choose which of a million niche topics totrack by RSS.However as Andrew points out in his post, Google and Yahoo – and apps like Bloglines –are the main tools now for accessing the datastream. Their influence over the datastreamis increasingly important – you can see evidence of this in Google’s highly profitable advertising business. richard macmanus 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Who Really Uses Mint.com (And Other Banking 2.0) Services Anyway?

first_imgGiven the U.S. economic crisis, people are looking for new and better ways to get a handle on their personal finances. We recently profiled 10 money management web applications that promise to do everything from analyzing your spending behavior to saving you money by negotiating lower rates on credit cards. The proliferation of these types of apps would have you believe there’s a big demand for web-based financial tools. But is there really? We would hope so, considering how their advanced technology can provide detailed analysis about your money (or lack thereof). However, we secretly wondered if the only people logging in to sites like Mint.com and the like are the young kids of Gen Y. Do adults with mortgages, credit card debt, and 401Ks even know how to use these tools? Are Banking 2.0 Users Really That Young? To find out who’s using the banking 2.0 tools and why, we started with Mint.com, who recently gave us a peek into their company’s data. As VentureBeat noted, Mint.com’s nearly 500,000 users are cutting down on expenses – they’ve spent an average of $300 less per month in August than in January this year, a 6% drop. However, they believed that early users of this site and those like it were sure to be younger and more tech-savvy. We believe they are tech-savvy, too, since it does require the use of computer and browser, and we know that not everyone can handle such complications. But we wondered: how young are the users really?  Mint.com Is Slowly AgingAlthough Mint.com doesn’t require you to fill out anything more than a zip code and email address in order to sign up, they’ve conducted multiple user surveys in order to get a grasp on their company’s demographic data. The end result of those surveys has given them a good idea of who uses the site. Mint.com admits that they, as a web company, did indeed “launch young.” In the beginning, their audience was primarily Generation Y. However, over the past year, their user base has been gradually aging. At launch, the average age of the user on the site was 27, the same as their CEO at the time, Aaron Patzer. Today, the average age is 28, only a year higher, a year later. So are they really growing up?Maybe they’re not aging overall as a site, but when you look at the breakdowns by age range, you can see that some of the older age groups are trending upwards. Look at the 40-year-olds and up, for example – there is some growth to be seen there. Below, you can see a chart that tracks changes between September, 2007 and July, 2008: Tags:#Features#NYT#Trends#web sarah perez Another trend that points to the aging of Mint users is the fact that more users now report owning their primary residence. In December 2007, that number was 39%. Today, 43% report that they own their own home. Why It Works: You Can Actually Save MoneyWhen we first reported Mint.com’s announcement that they had saved users over $100 million while managing $12 billion in transactions, some of you were skeptical. But the company is maintaining those numbers are accurate. This is in part to due the fact that when you take into consideration the number of accounts maintained at Mint (checking, savings, credit card, 401K, mortgages, car loans, etc.) and the number of users (now about half a million), it isn’t very hard to push that number up. However, it’s also high thanks to Mint.com’s wealthier-than-the-average-American user base. As of July 2008, the user’s average income level was over $100,000/year and 39% had investment assets over $50,000. But that’s not to say that Mint is only a tool for the wealthy tech elite – anyone can save money with the service. According to a company representative, 1 out of every 10 Mint.com users changes accounts after signing up for the service. This means that those users are tapping into Mint.com’s feature where the service recommends them a better offer. For example, a person with a credit card who charges a lot of airline tickets might be offered a different card with travel points. Another person might be recommended to switch from their Bank of America savings account to ING where they would get a better rate, perhaps. And yet another person might be recommended a credit card with a lower rate. And don’t be mistaken – those recommendations aren’t simply taking into account the introductory period where the credit card company slashes the rate to entice you, but looks at the credit card rate over the course of an entire year before determining whether it would really save the user money. What About The Other Startups In This Space?Given Mint.com’s user base of around 500,000 and their traffic numbers, they are one of the biggest, if not the biggest, personal finance/money management web service. They achieved this growth through smart advertising campaigns that reached out to the mainstream, especially women, in magazines like SELF, Real Simple, and Reader’s Digest. That appeared to have worked – today, 40% of new users on the site are women – that’s a much higher number than back in 2007, when only 15% of the users were female. So, what about the others? We reached out to some of the other banking 2.0 sites to see what sort of data they had, too. Out of the ten apps we previously featured, only Wesabe, Rudder, Geezeo, Xero, and Expensr had data on hand. iThryv is still preparing to launch and the rest did not respond to our request. Here’s how those sites compared:WesabeOver 100,000 users56% male, 44% female Median income: $60-80K Age: 60% are 30 or younger Misc. – 75% have a college degree or higher, 43% are married RudderThe company just launched at DEMO last month, but already have 15,000 users. They don’t collect demographic info.Geezeo30,000 users54% male, 46% female30% 18 – 34 years old38% 35 – 49 years oldSite attracts less affluent users More info hereXeroXero has 2200 paying customersTheir number of customers has grown 132% since March 31, 2008Xero will not disclose demographic data.Expensr25,000 usersUsers in their 20’s: 66%Users in their 30’s: 24%Great Tools, Now If Only Banks Would Tell People They Existed…Overall, we can tell there are some general trends here – banking 2.0 sites are still young, but are starting to gain traction among older users. More women are starting to use these applications which makes sense, give that they are typically the ones holding the household purse strings. However, we think that there should be more of a push by financial institutions to recommend these types of tools to their customers, instead of sticking with the old stand-bys that include desktop software applications like Quicken. As Alistair Newton, Research VP and Industry Services Director at Gartner noted earlier this year, “with banks coming under increasing pressure to deliver a range of short-term cost savings, the ways that banks interact with their customers will become increasingly important in managing costs downwards. There are a variety of ways in which banks can help customers save money and better manage their exposure to debt while saving the bank money by encouraging greater use of self-service applications.”Gartner also maintains that communities such as Mint.com, Wesabe, and Geezeo can be of long-term benefit to banks, especially as they help the more debt-exposed clients to manage their funds more effectively. We couldn’t agree more. Our hope is that in light of the country’s economic meltdown, these apps will get the push they deserve. Social Media: Poised to Replace E-Mail?

first_imgA new prediction from Gartner is sounding the death knell for e-mail.   They are forecasting that Social Media will be the successor.  By 2014 they predict that Social Media will become the primary vehicle for communication for 20 percent of the business population.Monica Basso, vice president at Gartner, said that “today, social paradigms are converging with e-mail, instant messaging (IM) and presence, creating new collaboration styles. However, a truly collaborative, effective and efficient workplace will not arise until organisations make these capabilities widely available and users become more comfortable with them.  Technology is only an enabler; culture is a must for success.  The rigid distinction between email and social networks will erode.  Email will take on many social attributes, such as contract brokering, while social networks will develop richer email capabilities.”Gartner points to big business email platform providers like Microsoft and IBM and see them as preparing to add connections into Social Networks from their email clients.  Contact lists, calendar items, and messaging clients will be shared across email messaging clients and social networks.  Smartphones and Mobile are front and center with acting as enablers for this change to come about. In 2009 about 7 percent of all email accounts were cloud-based.  Gartner expects that to rise to 10 percent by the end of 2012.   80 percent of the enterprise mobile email software market in 2012 will belong to either Microsoft or RIM.last_img read more

Dhoni-less India to take on Sri Lanka in ODI tri-series

first_imgAdversity is firing at the Indian team from all directions. And the Men in Blue are fast running out of ammunition. While they hit a purple patch, albeit briefly, in the middle of the tri-series by winning two games in a row and tying one, the Indians have stumbled and now take on a resurgent Sri Lanka in the eighth match of the tri-series knowing well that a slip now could send them into a freefall.Sri Lanka beat Australia with a bonus point on Friday and Australia meted out the same treatment to the Indians on Sunday here. With India the only team without a bonus win, things are getting a bit too close for comfort for the world champions.Sri Lanka have seven points from four games and India 10 from five. Tuesday’s day-night encounter at the ‘Gabba, therefore assumes bigger proportions. But before all that, both teams would be keeping one eye on the weather report as thunderstorms and heavy rain have been predicted in the afternoon and late evening. In case both teams end up splitting the points, the race to the final would be a dramatic one.Nonetheless, the sub-continental teams can only prepare their 100-over plans and India would be a lot more worried.Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni stands suspended for the match after the team took 4 hours to bowl its 50 overs on Sunday, its second such over-rate offence in 12 months. With Virender Sehwag expected to just about make a comeback from a back spasm and Sachin Tendulkar looking doubtful after receiving a blow to the head by a Brett Lee bouncer, the Indians are on shaky ground. The Sri Lankan fans here are having a good time watching their side giving the more fancied opponents a run for their money. And after mauling Australia in a rain-affected game at Sydney, the islanders will be raring to have a go at India. The buzz has settled in Brisbane after Sunday’s marquee match, but both sides know this series is alive as performances on the day have varied in the extremes.India will be contemplating changes in the bowling attack as the four-pacer strategy didn’t work in helpful conditions against the Aussies on Sunday. There is a case for R Ashwin to be brought back into the attack and the team management will have to decide which of Irfan Pathan and Umesh Yadav warrant a place in the eleven.Dhoni didn’t bowl spinner Ravindra Jadeja at all against Australia despite being behind the over-rate, but that shouldn’t be the case against the Lankans. Sehwag looks likely to lead the side in the absence of Dhoni and will have Parthiv Patel as his wicket-keeper. Sri Lanka have risen steadily. Captain Mahela Jayawardene has been inspirational and young Dinesh Chandimal, with 188 runs from four games, looks like he belongs to the big stage. On the bowling front, Lasith Malinga has picked the most wickets, six, but it’s Thisara Perera, with five wickets from three games, who has been the most incisive. The wicket should again suit seamers and with a forecast of cloudy and windy conditions, batting would be tough, if the weather gods permit play at all.advertisementlast_img read more

This Modeling Agency Wont Sign Anyone Younger Than 45 Years Old

first_imgAdvertisement LEAVE A REPLY Cancel replyLog in to leave a comment Login/Register With: Advertisement Advertisementcenter_img Facebook (Not a Canadian story but definitely worth a read)While it’s not uncommon for modeling agencies to discover prospective clients before they hit 16, one Moscow-based company is breaking the only-young-need-apply convention in a major way—by exclusively representing models over the age of 45. True to its name, Oldushka prides itself on a roster whose age range goes all the way up to 85—and boasts plenty of gray hair. The year-old agency grew out of founder Igor Gavar’s passion project, photographing retiree street style on his blog (also called Oldushka). “Beauty—it’s a quality that becomes more valued with years,” he writes in an email. “I met some very interesting faces, and I wanted to do a separate project with them. A modeling agency became that sort of project.” As of now, Oldushka represents 18 models in cities across Russia, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, and even Gavar’s far-flung Siberian hometown of Omsk. And aside from one male model, Sergey, who is 45 (“I signed him because he is older than he looks,” says Gavar), the agency’s youngest face is 60. Twitterlast_img read more

Health Mosquitoes are to be taken seriously

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 02 Oct 2015 – Environmental Health says we can take the bite out of mosquito bites, and issued some tips yesterday including that flower pots, buckets, barrels, boats, garbage lids, open cesspits, tree holes, pool covers and even toys can become breeding spaces for virus carrying insects. These warnings become far more weighty after 2014, and the boost in cases of Dengue Fever and Chikungunya Virus after Tropical Storm Cristobal, a rain maker which left stagnant water in nearly all islands for weeks. The information from EHD also becomes more important now that TCI has to cope with the after-effects of nearly three days of rain. BPL 1m Theft Probe Finds Payments To Fake Firms

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppBahamas, May 26, 2017 – Nassau – Four Bahamas Power and Light employees have been suspended and one person has been terminated pending an investigation into the theft of nearly $1m at the power company.According to a source close to the matter, the employees were accused of “orchestrating an elaborate scheme” over the course of one year, that allegedly involved fake companies and forged cheques. At least one bank employee was also allegedly involved in the plot and is being investigated.According to the source, BPL conducted an internal audit but forensic accountants are also being brought in to “ensure” transparency.“BPL uses external vendors frequently,” the source said. “What we understand is that the employees are accused of sending in invoices from fake companies, getting a cheque for the amount and then using someone in the bank to cash the cheques.Attorney Wayne Munroe, who is representing one of the employees, said he feels the government is under pressure to live up to promises of accountability and prosecution of those found stealing public funds. He warned that “public pressure can ruin people’s lives that money cannot compensate for.”“My client is on paid leave and as far as I know she has not been terminated,” Mr. Munroe stated.“I have been hearing so many different stories. They are saying payments went out to vendors and no work was done, but they are also saying the funds were missing. Well that isn’t missing funds, you know where the money is, that is fraud. We need to be careful, the last time the government changed they charged a woman at Bahamas Electricity Corporation, put her through court and she was acquitted and they had to pay her.”, he said.Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Stephen Dean confirmed that several persons have been questioned in relation to missing funds but said on Sunday that no one was in police custody and no one has been charged. He said the investigation is till “open and active”.#magneticmedianews#bplpaymentstofakefirms Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Related Items:#bplpaymentstofakefirms, #magneticmedianewslast_img read more
